Dr. Juilee Decker, Dr. David Messinger, and three interns Izzy Moyer, Gabby Smith, and Renee Guerin from the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology demonstrated the use of MISHA. They provided a lecture and demonstration of the equipment. Then we had the opportunity to work with them on using the imaging software with some of our current projects.

Donna Strahan, Head of Conservation and Scientific Research at the National Museum of Asian Art, lectured about Asian lacquer. Donna brought a variety of objects that provided a range of lacquer techniques and uses. We were able to handle and examine this wonderful collection, while having the opportunity to discuss lacquer with her.
Dr. Aniko Bezur, Wallace S. Wilson Director of the Technical Studies Laboratory at the Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage at Yale University, spent a day teaching about the fundaments of XRF analysis on cultural objects. She provided lectures on the interaction of x-rays with materials and how those interactions can be collected and analyzed. Aniko discussed safety protocols and demonstrated the use of both the Bruker Tracer 5 handheld XRF and the ARTAX X-ray analysis equipment. The class practiced operating the equipment and analyzing samples to further understand these techniques.

WNY Book Arts provides hands-on workshops for letterpress printing and other book arts. While there, we were able to select our font and images from an expansive collection to create a fitting design. Next we, learned how to apply ink and operate the press. Once we selected our ink, everyone was allowed the opportunity to run our own prints.
